Where is Summer?

So we are just two days shy of Canada Day (July 1) and I am wearing fleece sweat pants and a sweater. Is this normal for June 29? We had one week back at the beginning of June where it was really nice. Consistent temperatures above 25 for about a week. It was lovely. Lately the mornings are cool, by mid afternoon it's warm and then the evening comes and it's cool again. It has also been so windy I heard rumor that a tornado touched down somewhere in this province last week. Today has been so cool and cloudy and we have had spots of rain. I am just wondering when summer is going to make an appearance and we all know it will be gone by September 1. Sigh... hello summer, goodbye summer.

The month of June

Makayla's birthday has come and gone as you saw in the last post. Phil's new job keeps him busy and gone for many, many hours for five days in a row. I have three major things happening at church this summer and so am super busy trying to organize kids, volunteers, supplies, etc. We are also expecting some company this summer and so we know it is going to be busy. I can hardly believe that June is almost over. Really, where does the time go?

We went to the park the other night with some friends and the weather was perfect. I wish I had brought my camera, but thank goodness for camera phones, we were able to catch a few pics!

We also had the privilege of dedicating Makayla on Sunday morning (Father's Day). Dedicating Makayla is something that is pretty important to us. Dedicating her is not infant baptism, it does not cofirm her salvation or anything like that. It basically means that we as parents are dedicating her to God for his service and his glory and we pray that she will grow up to be a wonderful person. We also ask the church at that time to come along side us and help us to raise her as our extended family. Our church family is such a huge part of our life, especiallly since most of our family lives out of the province. We feel so blessed to have such wonderful friends.

We are so excited for our summer. With many guests coming to visit, a chance for us to get out and enjoy Edmonton and all it's festivals and all the projects we have going on at church, there will be much to write about in the next few months. I need to remember to bring my camera and post pictures as often as I can!

I hope you enjoying your June and I hope that you too have great things in store for the summer!

Ode to My Neglected Cats

Everything these days is about Makayla, so I thought today I would spend a little time to tell you about my cats. I have two cats. One that is orange and one that is grey and white. One is slim while the other one is a little on the heavy side. One likes to sleep and be lazy, while the other one is just crazy. Both are very special and have a special place in our hearts.

Carmel we got when we were living in Markham. Phil happened to be working at Petsmart at the time and one moring while they were doing some work moving some palets (sp?) they found a momma cat and three kittens. They tried to catch them. One ran into the store, one ran away and Phil managed to catch one of them and the one he caught bit him. One of the girls at the store fostered out the one that they caught. A few months later while I was away on a missions trip, Phil worked out the details with the girl and our landlord and brought her home. When I came back from the airport there was this little tiny kitten sitting in my living room. I was so surprised because Phil is (was) really allergic to cats. The first two weeks were terrible. He was taking meds like they were candies and sneezing all the time. I was ready to take her back but he fought through and has no more reactions.

The next year when we were living in Red Deer, Phil was again (or still) working at Petsmart. They have an adoption center there and Phil saw this cute grey and white cat with a red bow tie. He called me and told me to bring Carmel over to see if they would get along because he just had to adopt Smokey. So I drove over with Carmel and they just sniffed each other. So, we adopted Smokey. The next few weeks were full of flying fur, hissing and lots of chasing each other around the house. Smokey likes to sleep and chill about during the day and night. She is really easy going and she really loves Makayla. Funny story - when I was pregnant Smokey would always lie on my belly and try to sit in my lap. Now she sits in my lap and lets Makayla maul her. She actually sees it like a massage!

We love our cats and the personalities that they have. The are both so different and so fun to have around. Here are a few pics of our cats!
(They love Makayla so much we caught both of them at different times sleepin in her crib.)

The Big FIRST Birthday!

In the past I have read mom's blogs who recount the first year of their child's life and in my head I thought, that's kinda lame. But now that my baby is turning ONE, it's not all that lame! It really does seem like yesterday that we were calling my mom to come out and getting ready to have a baby. Now one year has gone by and she has grown so much.

She had so many first this year, from plane rides, to car trips, to outings at the mall, to getting her first tooth, to taking her first steps (although not all by herself yet), to eating her first food, etc. It has been so much fun and joy to have her in our life and we feel so blessed.

This weekend/week has been busy so far. On Sunday we had cake for whoever wanted to join us. We had a lot of cake and a lot of people.

Then Sunday evening we headed over to a joint birthday party with friends Jeff and Adoria . We had a lot of fun. The cake here says "Happy Birthday JAM" being Jeff, Adoria and Makayla.

Tuesday was Makayla's actual birthday and we had a chance to celebrate with some of our closest friends. Thanks Joe for hosting us at your place (and for all the leftover food!). We had a great time with about 26 friends. We are so lucky to have such great friends here as all our family is either in BC or Ontario. Makayla has been a little cranky over the weekend and Wednesday we discovered that she is about to get tooth number two, so we totally understand her crankiness, plus the craziness of the weekend. Can you blame her? I wish I had more time to take pictures, but she would not seem to let go of me. Poor thing.

Having a little bit of a rough moment (but seriously so cute!)...

The Panda cupcakes that I made her.

The much anticipated picture of the first tooth.

To end off the big year, Makayla had her 12 month immunizations on Wednesday morning. She cried a little more than the last time, but about 10 minutes later she was busy wanting to play with her stuffed Moose. She had a great nap and is now sound asleep in bed! What an exhausting few days. I am so glad that it is over and now we can get back to our regular scheduled life!

Happy Birthday Makayla. We can't wait to watch you grow and learn more over this next year!

Oh So Tired

We had a busy weekend. Phil began his new job this past week and was busy, busy. This weekend our church celebrated it's 25th Anniversary. That means that there were all kinds of things going on. Friday and Saturday night we had a guest speaker come and share with us and I was asked to put something together for the kids. I agreed and decided that we would walk the kids to the park as long as the weather was nice. Lucky for us the weather was nice and we only had 4 kids on Friday night and 5 on Saturday night. I was so tired by Saturday night (I am too old to play at the park!). Being out at church those two nights also meant that Makayla was up late so she was a little on the grump side come Sunday! I also did a bunch of projects on Saturday afternoon and tried to get caught up with some baking and house chores. A friend came by for a chat and it was nice to have some adult conversations. Sunday we were at church and then we had a big dinner on Sunday evening with about 450 people celebrating the church. I know that I was tired because Sunday afternoon as soon as Makayla went down for her nap so did I. We both woke up three hours later!

Now the week has begun and it shows no signs of slowing down! Monday I spent the whole day cleaning and doing laundry and was at a meeting last night for about 4 hours. Now it's Tuesday and the to do list is a little shorter, but still so many things to do.

Hope you have a wonderful week and here we are going to have great weather so here's to hoping we get to spend some time outside!

Cheers!
